The Songs of
Brennende Drømmer
Alienation is the
underlying subject of Incognito city, and the city mentioned in the
song is strongly influenced by apathy. Everybody speaks, but nobody is
listening and nobody cares. The inhabitants of this city are beings
without any identity. Who are they? Do they have names?
Dvergenes
palass (The
Palace of the Dwarfs) tells the story of the dwarfs who created the world.
The dwarfs can symbolise all the small human beings who made the world as
it is. The song is an attack on all attempts to explain what can’t be
explained. There must be a room for myths and fantasy even
nowadays.
Nostradamus gives a poetic account of the
visions of Nostradamus. Many have dreamt of being able to look into the
future, but none of them would have liked to see the gloomy future that
Nostradamus saw. It’s better to live in uncertainty and hope for the best.
Pilegrim (Pilgrim) is
an epic song about a wandering wise old man. He is asked where he is
heading, but has no other answer than “farther”. Man is searching for
meaning and comfort, but even wise old men haven’t got any soothing answer
to give. All they say is
“walk on!”
Jublende rekker
(Jubilant Ranks) poke fun at the strict frames that people tend to make
around their own lives. Our lives are full of regulations and structure
down to the smallest detail, but anyway we consider ourselves free to do
whatever we want. How come so few do what they really like then?
Middelveis (Halfway) is
about all the choices that we have to make. Distinct from our shadows we
can choose where to go. Some ways are safe, but also boring. The
alternative is to choose an unsafe direction, which might on the other
hand be more exciting. What will you choose?
Berg og dvale
(Hills
and Hibernation) has got it’s motif from the medieval ballads, in which
people could be spirited off into mountains. All these creatures must
still be there, and what will happen when they break out of their
imprisonment? The song is an attempt to bring the vision of a mystical
nature from the past to a new audience.
In Døende stein
(Dying stones) we meet a poet who is sitting in his attic, writing
poems about bombs and war. A few years later he got the power to turn
these horrible visions into reality. The song is based on the life of
Radovan Karadsic, and the chorus contains fragments of one of his
poems.
I tåketimen is a
description of what might happen when we find our way through the door
to “The lake of the frozen
dreams.” At the lake we can climb on board the ship of dreams and sail
away to new harbours, and inevitably surrounded by mythical
characters.
